Personal Statement
Prof. Yemi Oke had his LL.M and PhD degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Canada; LL.B from University of Ilorin, Nigeria; B.L. from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja.
He is a Professor of Energy/Electricity Law and pioneering specialist and leading expert/scholar in Oil & Gas, Energy and Electricity Law in Africa. He has authored several books on the subjects. He is an internationally renowned scholar and has authored numerous other legal writings under various headings of Energy Resources, including Electricity Law and Regulation, International Environmental Law, Climate Change Law, Project Finance, Oil & Gas and Minerals and Mining Law.
Prof Oke is the author of 10 law books including monographs, and about 100 published foreign and local academic and professional articles in his areas of specialisation. At various times in the course of his legal training, he was the ‘Best Performance Award Winner, Department of Public Law University of Ilorin, Nigeria; Best Performance Award Winner, Department of Private and Property Law, and was also awarded several prizes in other law subjects in the same University. For his postgraduate education, he was recipient of the prestigious ‘York University Scholarship for Academic Distinctions’ and ‘Peter W. Hogg Award’ (for exceptional students with demonstrable leadership potentials) at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Ontario, Canada and the ‘Willard Z. Estey Fellowship for Research and Teaching Excellence’ among other scholarships/fellowships by the same institution.
He was at various times counsel in leading law firms in Nigeria including Chief Rotimi Williams’ Chambers; Babalakin & Co; Olaniwun Ajayi and KPMG Nigeria. In the course of his graduate studies, he taught at the York University and Ryerson University both in Ontario, Canada before joining the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.
