Personal Statement

Professor Simeon Igbinedion obtained his LL.B. degree from the University of Lagos in 1997, and B.L. certification from the Nigerian Law School in 1999, both in Second Class Upper Division. Upon completing his national youth service and a brief stint in legal practice, he proceeded to Tokyo for further studies by the financial grace of the Japanese Government (Monbusho) scholarship award. Subsequently, he had his LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees in 2004 and 2007, respectively, from the imperial and prestigious Gakushuin University, Tokyo. He joined the Department of Jurisprudence & International Law in the Faculty of Law in February 2008.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Law. His academic interests include Jurisprudence & Legal Theory, International Human Rights Law, Cross-border Crimes, International Criminal Law, Public International Law and International Economic Law while his professional interests relate to grand corruption, illicit financial flows (IFFs), money laundering, assets recovery and repatriation of recovered assets from custodial states to victim states.

Both interests have culminated in numerous publications in both international and local journals. Apart from being a consultant on assets recovery and anti-money laundering compliance measures, Dr. Igbinedion periodically trains and consults for NGOs that engage in campaigns against corruption and advocacy for the restoration of assets plundered by politically exposed persons (PEPs) to their original state owners. Incidentally, between November 2021 and October 2022, he was a consultant on IFFs to Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agency, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

Quite recently, he was engaged by the ECOWAS Commission to draft Guidelines on borderless investigation of corruption and illicit financial flows, and the recovery of associated assets. He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), National Association of Law Teachers (NALT), and Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA).
