Personal Statement

Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, a Senior Lecturer, teaches Human Rights Law and Civil Liberties, Constitutional law, Gender and the Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. She had her Law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from University of Notre Dame, USA and holds a Ph.D. from University of London with specialization in Gender and International Humanitarian Law.

Akiyode-Afolabi is a gender and development expert, with over twenty-five years of experience in legal practice and Not-For Profit Sector. She has led interventions before the United Nations on Global Terrorism Prevention, Universal Periodic Review Committee, Convention on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee to mention a few. Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi served as a delegate at the 2014 National Conference and the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee of 2017, which led to Electoral Act 2022.

She is a recipient of several national and international awards including the 1999 UN Defenders Award, 2022 University of Michigan Visiting Scholar Activist Award for activists whose works have influenced positive practice worthy of global emulation and solidarity, 2023, ‘Most Outstanding Leader Award by UNDP, UN WOMEN, US, UK Embassies, among others. She has published widely in local and international books and journals.
