PROFESSOR JOSEPH E. O. ABUGU, SAN

Professor J. E. O. Abugu, Ph.D, SAN was educated at Urhobo College, Effurun, Delta State,

Nigeria; Centre for Business Studies, Royal Hill, Greenwich, London; University of Nigeria

Nsukka(1988) and University of Lagos(1991 and 2003). He was called to the Bar in 1989, joined

the Faculty in 1995 and became a professor in 2012. His areas of specialisation are Company

and Securities Law, Industrial Law and Law of Banking and Negotiable

Instruments. Professor Abugu has served the University in several capacities, including as the

Ag.Chairman of the University Legal Research Committee; Coordinator of the Advanced Diploma

in Commercial Law and Practice; and Coordinator of the Interdepartmental LLM Programme .

Outside Nigeria, he was a Rotary International Exchange Ambassador of the State of Arizona,

USA (1999), Fulbright Scholar resident at the Centre for Law and Financial Markets of the

Chicago-Kent College of Law, IIT, Chicago, Illinois (2002); and Training Fellowship at the ILO

Training Centre, Turin, Italy (2007). A member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Law

Teachers Association and the Nigerian Institute of Management, Prof Abugu is well published in

national and international journals and is the author of the pioneer text on Nigerian Securities

Law titled: Company Securities: Law and Practice. He was admitted to the Inner Bar as Senior

Advocate of Nigeria in 2020; He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), as well

as the Nigerian Institute of Management.
